Film Screening at the Egyptian Theater (with John Cannizzaro)

9th ANNUAL ATTACK of the 50 FOOT REELS.... screening this Thur, Oct 22nd, 2009 at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood at 7:30pm. Its another ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT REELS show ..........21 short 2 1/2 min films....seeing them for the first time with the filmmakers themselves. Should be a fun evening. Come on down for the excitement. Here's how it works: Each filmmaker chooses one roll (50 feet) of KODAK Super 8 film. Tri-x (black & white) Plus-x (black & white) Ektachrome (color) Vision 200 (color negative) Vision 500 (color negative). The filmmakers shoot their films in order, in other words, all editing and cuts that are made, are made IN CAMERA. There are no splicers used. To make sure of this, the filmmakers turn in their "unprocessed" film to Flicker. Flicker hands the film over to Yale film and video for processing. The films are then transferred at Yale to digital video for viewing on the large Egyptian screen. The films are transferred for best color and contrast - NO EDITS or CUTS are made within the content of the film. The filmmakers give flicker their music, soundtrack, soundscape which will be orginal scores created for their film. The sound is started with the first picture, so if it works it works. It's all up in the air, like life, everyday a surprise. You never know what you're going to get. And that's the way it is with the daring and nervous filmmakers awaiting this year's ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT REELS! American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre 7:30pm October 22, 2009

FOUNTAIN OF YOUTH to screen at LA's Film Forum

"FIRST SIGHT SCENE" AT THE LOS ANGELES FILMFORUM
NEW EXPERIMENTAL WORKS BY SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA FILMMAKERS
–– Los Angeles, CA – Showcasing the work of Southern California experimental filmmakers, the Los Angeles Filmforum, the city’s longest running experimental screening series, presents First Sight Scene, a program of new experimental shorts by local filmmakers, on January 27 at the Spielberg Theatre at the Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.
First Sight Scene has been a yearly event for the exhibition of new works by Southern California experimental filmmakers since it was established by previous Filmforum Director Jon Stout in 1992. This year’s program presents the work of Madison Brookshire, John Cannizzaro, Erik Deutschman, Gwenaelle Gobe, Thomas Helman, Christina McPhee, and Dena DeCola and Karin E. Wandner, and is curated by Jaimie Baron and Victoria Meng, who are both graduate film scholars studying at UCLA and volunteers at the Los Angeles Filmforum.
This year’s First Sight Scene includes Madison Brookshire’s landscape meditation entitled Opening, shot on 16mm film and accompanied by a minimalist soundtrack performed by live musicians; John Cannizzaro’s Super8 poem Fountain of Youth, which explores feelings of nostalgia for childhood and a disappearing medium of remembrance; Erik Deutschman’s comic experiment with optical illusion, entitled Stare Gently; Gwenaelle Gobe’s animated short, The Old Noise, in which the filmmaker uses silhouette cut-outs to tell the story of a girl with two heads; Thomas Helman’s nightmarish digital animation df/dx; Christina McPhee’s video Carrizoprime, which traces seismic distortion along the San Andreas Fault; and Five More Minutes, Dena DeCola and Karin E. Wander’s moving blend of documentary and narrative about a mother and daughter.
Screening time: approximately 75 minutes
Los Angeles Filmforum is the city’s longest-running organization that screens non-commercial experimental and avant-garde films and video art, documentaries, and animation. Filmforum began in Pasadena, and 2008 is the start of its 32nd year.
